Visiting Kansas

Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is a hub of commerce, culture and activity. South Riverside Park, the Mid-America All-Indian Center, the Wichita Art Museum, and the Old Cowtown Museum sit in close proximity to each other at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers, offering indoor and outdoor attractions for visitors. Old Town Wichita, in the heart of downtown, offers tree lined street with historic buildings, now housing shops, restaurants and clubs – a fun place to enjoy Wichita’s hospitality. Visit the Century II Performing Arts Center for performances of the Wichita Grand Opera or the Wichita Symphony.

Wichita is an all-seasons destination. Whether you are passing though, visiting family or on vacation enjoy the diversity of fun. Outdoor enthusiasts don't miss a visit to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the flint Hills of Kansas; take the family to the Sedgwick County Zoo or the Great Plains Nature Center. Must-see indoor destinations range from the Museum of World Treasures with its T-rex skeleton and Egyptian mummies, to the Kansas African American Museum.

Through summer, Exploration Place at the Sedgwick County Science and Discovery Center in Wichita hosts Star Wars, Where Science Meets Imagination. Through Labor Day 2012, see the science behind the technologies depicted in Star Wars Films. Over 80 props, models and costumes from the original films are exhibited. Be sure to visit the Exploring Flight and Design area for the Millennium Falcon Experience, where you can climb aboard Han Solo’s prize space ship and zoom through space.

Celebrate Kansas’s heritage and culture August in El Dorado. The 2012 Frontier Western Celebration features events from the Miss Frontier Western Celebration Pageant, at El Dorado Middle School Auditorium, to the Extreme Bull Blowout, and the Smoke on the Prairie BBQ Contest at the arena Butler County Fairgrounds. Get the kids ready for Mutton Bustin’, along with the Parade and Kids Corral. Have fun at El Dorado’s Frontier Western Celebration with some traditional Kansas fun.

While you’re in the area, this is the season for El Dorado State Park with the El Dorado Reservoir. Enjoy your favorite water recreation or a day lakeside at the beach. Hikers and bikers have nearly twenty miles of trails to enjoy, with El Dorado Lake to cool off in, when you’re finished.

Spend Labor Day weekend in Dodge City for the Cowhand’s & Corriente’s Championship Ranch Rodeo. The 2012 Rodeo features finals and top hand competition, at Round Up Arena in Historic Dodge City. Events are September 1st and 2nd, showcasing the skills of working cowboys and ranch hands handling Corriente Cattle. They’re ‘Bringin’ the Ranch to Town’ in Dodge City!

Kansas City offers sports fans year-round entertainment. Summer sees the stands at Kauffman Stadium, filled with Royals baseball fans, while west of Kansas City the minor league T-Bones take home field at Community America Ballpark. Come August, Kansas City Chiefs football begins preseason play with Arrowhead Stadium heating up in September for the Chiefs 2012 regular season play running through December. Livestrong Sporting Park keeps MLS Sporting Kansas City fans in the stands through October.
