The busiest airport in the state, the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) serves the city of Wichita, as well as surrounding areas in southern Kansas. Wichita State University
Southern Kansas is home to one of the three research universities in the state. Wichita State University joins Kansas State University and University of Kansas, with this distinction. Wichita State University was established as Fairmount College, a private Congregational school, in 1886. By 1895, the school began offering collegiate classes. The name changed again in 1926, to Municipal University of Wichita, when it became a public non-denominational college.
