Nicodemus Visitor Center & Townhall

Established in July 1877, Nicodemus was one of the first African-American communities established by former slaves after the Civil War.

It is the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River and it is located a short drive north from Hays.

Today's historic site covers five buildings. Explore a walking tour covering the historic township hall, African Methodist Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, St. Francis Hotel, and Nicodemus School District #1 Schoolhouse.
